2. Civil War App – as we celebrate our country’s 235th birthday today, we should remember that our country has overcome many challenges, but none as dire as The Civil War, 150 years ago. The Civil War Today app, by A & E, the History Channel and Bottle Rocket Apps, brings news of the Civil War to your iPad as if it were happening today. This amazing app for iPads, which will be updated daily until April 26, 2015, is available in the iTunes App Store. Read my full review of this quality app here: The Civil War Today: A Must-Have iPad App!
3. The White House – want current information on what the President is up to? Check out The White House app, free in the Android Market and iTunes App Store. The White House app has features such as:
- A Blog,
- Video Clips,
- Photos,
- News Room and
- What’s Happening Live
You can also stay up to date by following @whitehouse on Twitter.
4. Show of Hands – if you want to learn someone’s opinion, just ask. That’s what Show of Hands does and reveals the answers to you in a clever format. This addictive, free app asks three questions each day and then reveals the answers. You can search the responses according to state, gender, income, political party, age and income. The app has added a Comment section so you can read what’s on others’ minds or add your own 2¢. Read all about Show of Hands in my review: Show of Hands: A Poll Lot of Fun!.
5. Stack the States – get the kids involved with this educational, adorable game that combines the elements of history, geography and a puzzle game (a bit like Tetris). Stack the States quizzes you on information about the states, such as capitals, shapes, mottos and location, among other subjects. Get the questions correct and you drop the state to the bottom of the screen. Stack the states above the finish line to achieve new levels and unlock new states.
Your kids will love this game because it’s fun and addicting. You’ll love this game because it’s educational (though be careful because adults can get addicted to this game as well!). If you need convincing this game is fun and addictive, see this Flickr image of a proud kid who learned about all 50 states through this app: Stack the States!.
Check out this $0.99 app in the iTunes App Store.
6. Fireworks! – Can’t get to a live fireworks show? Away from your loved ones? Create your own fireworks display with a creative, free app from Swakker, Fireworks, available in the iTunes App Store. Interesting blog. I’m learning more about apps for phones reading these blogs. I did a techy blog on a TV!

Hi Mike, Great tech blog, I’m very impressed you read the instructions on how to use your tv. So much can be learned by taking the time to read the instructions. But if you get a smartphone it may not come with instructions, so you will need to do a little research.
Thanks for your visit, comment and tweet!

Very interesting; the Civil War history has always interested me. I have direct relatives I can trace on the southern side but I’m sure there were some on the northern side as well. It’s hard to believe America could be in a war like that.
Thanks for sharing, and yes, some day I will have a device that uses apps…………..

Hi Mike, Thanks so much for the shoutout on the Love Money blog! Yes, I did get quite a few hits from your comment there, I really appreciate it.
I took your advice and bought Stack the States. Good choice. At our 4th of July picnic yesterday, my niece played it for two hours! (and I lost all my battery)

Hi Amy, Welcome to The Wonder of Tech! I’m so glad your niece enjoyed the game Stack the States. Addictive, isn’t it? Though you lost your battery, your niece left the picnic much more educated than when she arrived. I just hope she didn’t miss the fireworks!
Thanks so much for your visit and kind comment.
I’m sure these apps made bank on July 4th, there are some neat ones on this list. Thanks so much for sharing Carolyn … I know some of these would have proved useful in History class.

Hi Carolyn,
I am always interested in knowing a country’s history. It gives an excellent insight about its people, its culture and its beliefs. I think the apps that you have mentioned will give me a good idea on USA.
Let me check them out.

Hi Ashvini, Yes, the apps do a great job of teaching about the US. The Manual for the United States of America has pretty much all the information you could want about the US. But Stack the States is a fun way to learn about the US too! I hope you enjoy learning about the US from these apps!
Thanks so much for your visit, comment and tweet!

Very nice, Carolyn. Who would have thought there were so many apps for America? I especially like the Fireworks one. It helps us add a personal touch to our messages along with fireworks. How fun and creative is that! Perfect for the Fourth of July. I like that we can customize it for other occasions as well.
Thanks for the featured apps.

Hi Allyson, you’re right, there are a lot of apps for the US! The Fireworks app is great to use year round to send animated ecards to people. They will smile when they get their message complete with Fireworks!

The manual would be really interesting, America is a fascinating country in more than one way. Has a unique history, unique unique tourist attractions, and, why not, even interesting people.
$4.99 for that manual is not a bad investment.
Martin recently published this awesome post..How To Get Your Commercial Driver’s License
Hi Martin, I completely agree. In general the price of apps is a steal. Most people wouldn’t think twice about buying a book with all of that information for $4.99. And apps you can keep with you wherever you go. Chances are you would pay much for for a book and wouldn’t have it with you when you needed it.
Thanks so much for your visit and comment!

One thing’s for sure, a book with all that info would be a lot more expensive than $4.99
Looks to me a win on all fronts.
